Valentine’s Day, Shemaletine’s Day – okay, that rhyme doesn’t quite work, but February 14th is not a big deal in my house. My husband and I actively avoid the dinner crowds, don’t buy each other gifts and prefer to spend Valentine’s night eating nachos and watching our favourite comedies. One thing we do indulge in on Valentine’s Day is great wine and today’s review is no exception.
Located in Beamsville, Back 10 Cellars makes exceptional wine across the board, but it’s their sparkling wine, Smitten, that truly makes me blush.
The Wine: 2016 Smitten Sparkling Wine*
The Price: $24.95
The Grape: Riesling
The Location: Beamsville Bench
Smitten was made in the Charmat Method, otherwise known as Tank Method or ‘Cuve Close’. This is when the second fermentation happens in big closed pressure tanks, as opposed to in the bottle (which is what happens during the ‘Traditional Fermentation’ method).
This is a friendly sparkling wine – it’s crisp and fresh with a perfect amount of acidity. It’s also incredibly drinkable; it’s not overly sweet or overly dry – there’s a lovely balance that’s going on in the glass that’s infectious – I just want to keep drinking it.
Though I’m all for drinking sparkling wine for no reason (it’s Wednesday, that’s a good enough reason in my books), Smitten is a sparkling wine you want to share with friends and loved ones. So whatever your occasion, be sure to make the drive to Beamsville and pick up a bottle or twelve.
Until next time, happy wining.
*Please note I was reviewing the 2016 vintage, and Back 10 has released their 2017 vintage which I'm sure is just as delicious.
