There are some nights when you decide to stay in, snuggle on the couch and catch up on television shows you’re usually too busy to watch. When choosing what wine to drink for a night of relaxation, I wanted a wine with great flavour that wasn’t too light or too heavy. Enter Malivoire’s 2013 Chardonnay. Chardonnay gets a bad rap for many reasons, one of which is a heavy oak-flavour that people compare to old socks, stinky cheese and so on. There is such a thing as unoaked Chardonnay, which can be delicious, but I do love an oaky Chardonnay. Good Chardonnay is, in my opinion, some of the best and most flavourful wine out there. When it’s good, Chardonnay is complex, it’s rich, but not heavy and when it’s great, Chardonnay is bold and the oak adds a wonderful silkiness to the wine.
Luckily for me, Malivoire’s Chardonnay is all of these things.
The Wine: Malivoire Chardonnay
The Price: $19.95
Location: Beamsville, Ontario
This Chardonnay is a golden straw-yellow, and it smells like apricots. It is floral on the nose and buttery on the palate. This is a lovely summer Chardonnay – one that I can see sipping at dusk. (Can you tell I’m lusting for warmer weather?) This is also a Chardonnay that’s begging to be paired with sharp, old cheddar and some crusty bread. (Can you tell I’m always hungry?)
Malvioire’s Chardonnay is zesty and I taste hints of pear and apple, alongside the flavours of fresh apricots. This Chardonnay isn’t heavy, nor is it too light – it is just right. There’s a freshness here that some Chardonnay’s are lacking, but the wine also manages to maintain its traditional oaky flavour, complete with hints of vanilla and, as I mentioned, a buttery finish.
I’ve said it before and I am sure I will say it again, Malvioire is consistently one of my favourite wineries, creating imaginative and delicious wines year after year, and I am lucky enough that they are just a hop, skip and a jump away from my front door.
Would I buy this again? Yes, alongside some scrumptious cheese and bread. I cannot wait to open the next bottle!
