Sometimes a wine comes along and you can’t wait to open it, to swirl it around in your glass and dive in. Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc is one of those wines.
From the famed and highly regarded Marlborough region in New Zealand, this wine hits all the right notes for me it checks all the boxes. When I took a sip of this wine, well, it took all of my efforts not to yell, “Fuck yes, Cloudy Bay!” Actually, who am I kidding? I totally did yell that and I did a happy dance too.
The Wine: Cloudy Bar Sauvignon Blanc
Grape Variety: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Marlborough, New Zealand
Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc is spicy, with lime and herbaceous tones and layers. It tastes like tart, toasted apples and lemongrass. It’s not overly grassy, like some Sauvignon Blancs, and while I thoroughly enjoy grass-like flavours with my wine, not everyone does. As the wine warms up, I smell toast on the nose - almost like fresh baking, but this wine never loses its crisp edge. Nectarines and tropical flavours like passion fruit start to come alive, and it really does take effort for me to not get lost in my glass.
One of the reasons I love Sauvignon Blancs is because they have so much complexity and elegance to them. They’re medium-to-full-bodied wines, and have amazing flavours, without being overly heavy; you don’t feel weighted down by drinking them.
This is arguably one of the most famous Sauvignon Blancs in the world, and it’s easy to see why. It lives up to the hype, trust me. Cloudy Bay was established in 1985, and put Marlborough on the wine map. I can’t thank them enough for creating this incredible wine - even their website is beautiful and definitely worth a glance: https://www.cloudybay.co.nz
Now, this wine is out of my usual price point and I try to make an effort to keep most wines here under $30, with most wines running around $15-$20. That said, I am all for treating yourself and wine is meant to be enjoyed and shared; so by all means - treat yourself to a bottle of this wine. I honestly would drink this wine every night if I could. New goal for 2017: drink more Cloudy Bay!
