What do you do when it’s the middle of a heat wave and you’re craving red wine? Turn up the AC, and open some damn Carignan.
The Wine: Carmen Gran Reserva Carignan, 2016
The Price: $16.95
The Grape: Carignan
The Region: Maule, Chile
My husband introduced me to this grape variety back in the spring and he’s had a long-standing love affair with it (longer than we’ve been together, I might add). It’s hard to come by in Ontario so whenever we see some at the LCBO, we scoop it up. Seriously, the last time we found a bottle we loved we pretty much cleared out the shelves.
This Gran Reserva Carignan by Carmen, a Chilean producer, has notes of cedar and licorice on the nose. It’s earthy; like you’ve accidentally spilt your favourite spices into your garden after a rainfall. Think bay leaves, cinnamon, nutmeg, the richness of good quality soil. It has a wonderful tonality to it: full bodied, but with a kick. Flavours of plum and red apple slices dominate on the palette. This #ValueVino comes in at $16.95. A great way to start the week, don’t you think?
